Happy 40th Birthday, Sesame Street!


Sesame Street was a huge part of my childhood, and I’m sure it was a huge part of yours too. Who could forget “A loaf of bread, a container of milk and a stick of butter” or “Who are the people in your neighborhood?” My Mom said she’d plop me in front of the television when Sesame Street was on and I’d be good for the next hour or so.

Little things I can’t forget :

Oscar the Grouch’s Spaghetti Ice Cream. I was so tempted to scoop a serving of spaghetti into an ice cream cone upon seeing that episode. I still can’t get it out of my head.

Wondering how deep Oscar’s home was. It was just a trash can, but my kiddie mind wondered if he had a living room inside, or a kitchen, or a bedroom…

Cookie Monster’s monstrous cookie eating. I LOVED eat it when Cookie Monster would go “om nom nom!” then stuff the cookies into his mouth. The crumbs would go all over the place! It was so much fun to watch! And imitate? Hmm. I never really tried.

Big Bird’s Nest. It didn’t look particularly comfortable now, did it? But it sure would’ve made a nifty hangout.

The Alligator King. Definitely one of my favorite Sesame Street animations.

Grover’s Near-Far Sketch. Oh c’mon, I’m SURE you know this one! And I’m sure you can copy Grover perfectly too!

Bert and Ernie. They were like the puppet equivalents of Larry and Balki from Perfect Strangers. Balki’s stuffed sheep Dmitri was the Rubber Duckie equivalent. Were Bert and Ernie related, by the way? I always thought they were brothers.

“Today’s episode of Sesame Street was brought to you by the letters…” A cue that it’s time to move on to other things at home aside from watching TV.

Luis looks for “Agua.” Agua was the first Spanish word I learned, thanks to this sketch! Until now, I say “Aaaaguuaaaa” the way Luis says it when I’m very thirsty.

Kermit the Frog newsflash. “Hi-ho this is Kermit the Frog…” And I loved the News Flash logo! Someone should put that on a T-shirt.

The Typewriter on Wheels. Nu ni nu ni nu…

Kids painting the letter P and other P words on glass. I wanted to be one of these kids! The horse was one of my favorite drawings. Oh wait, it was a pony. Sorry.

I could go on and on. Thank you Jim Henson. Thank you Sesame Street for this fuzzy, warm and colorful feeling you give me. Shows like yours make me wish I were a kid again.

    i love sesame street too…my fav character is …. cookie monster. and i still have one (toy) at home now…heeee *smiling sheepishly*

    I was raised on Sesame Street. I love the Yip Yip aliens, the family of bugs who live in Ernie’s flower box and that “A loaf of bread, a container of milk and a stick of butter” animated short. And the video of a flower that grew on the side of a building, with a Vivaldi guitar piece as background? Sesame Street taught me to love baroque music at an early age with that video.

    this post’s a nice walk along memory lane! everything mentioned here is a favorite and i can relate to everything you cited Tones!super same sentiments on the kids painting on glass! =) some of the things I love and remember from sesame street are: the Teeny Weeny Super guy who looks like ziggy on a glass (don’t know if i got the name right tho), 1-12 pinball count (1-2-3-4-5/6-7-8-9-10/11-12…twelve!), the one where Grover’s a waiter and he keeps getting orders wrong, so many. kahit replay yung episode, papanoorin mo parin :) i love sesame street!

    Oh yeah waiter Grover too!

    i love sesame street! my favorite would have to be the pin ball count and the little puppet babies singing “dada goo goo..” those were the days…

    Toni! It’s been awhile since I commented here.
    My memories of Sesame Street:
    1) Same as yours- Oscar The Grouch’s Spaghetti Flavored Ice Cream
    2) The family of bugs living in Ernie’s flower box. To this day, when my family piles into a car, we say “The family car? The family car!” in small bug voices.
