Mondays are the hardest

Yesterday morning's clouds. Got a little freaked out by it. Give me my giant cotton candy cumulus clouds please.

It’s been two months since I returned to full-time work. There are times when it’s easy to get out of bed, say goodbye to my sleeping boy and be one with the morning rush. There are times when it’s immensely difficult, when I’m already at my desk and I just want to burst into tears. Mondays are the hardest.

A lot of my friends and former colleagues who are aware of my journey from WAHM to full-time corporate Mom have been asking me how I’m finding the transition. My answers have ranged from “Really good!” to “Really difficult!” I guess it depends on what day you’re asking me. Or what time of the day.

I will be honest and tell you this — it’s more difficult than I thought it would be, but the difficulty just pushes me to work even harder.

There are a number of things I am already missing given that I’m working full-time. Accompanying my son to school. Singing him to sleep, as I’ve been coming home later and later each week. Fudge, I might even miss enrolment and delegate the task to someone else. These are the things that break my heart.

But I have it easy.

I am thankful that I get to spend two full days with my son before the dreaded Monday. I am thankful that he jumps into my arms when I come home late at night and he’s still awake. I am thankful that we’re able to save more for his future. I am thankful that he’s surrounded everyday by overflowing love from family. I am thankful he is happy and safe, and healthy and loved.

I am thankful I see him everyday, but I aim for him to see more of me.

I am thankful he is exploring school now, but I wish to be more involved.

It’s not easy, but there’s always a way for what you want to happen.

My heart breaks every Monday morning, but my heart grows stronger as I resolve to be a better parent everyday. IT’s tough to do that when you’re away for most of the day. I don’t have the answers. I don’t have the solutions. What I have is the support of my husband and family, the love and belief my son has in me. This is my fuel.

*****

Timmy was spinning around last night in the bedroom. He spun faster and faster, pausing once in a while to catch his step, stumble a bit, but then regain his balance and spin again.

With each spin he became braver, pushing his arms out wider, wider, wider, until he was spinning faster, faster, in much bigger circles than when he first started.

He giggled as he lost his balance, and in his dizzy state found his way to me before stumbling into my arms, laughing his heart out.

He could have chosen the bed to fall into. He could have chosen to just lay on the floor and sort his whirling world out. But he spun and spun until he found me, and when he did, zoomed into my arms to be caught.

“Mamamee,” he giggled as he looked up at me with a slight dizziness, but with joy full throttle.

“I’m here, little boy,” I giggled back, scooping him up in my arms and giving him a big hug and a kiss.

*****

Little does he know that when I spin, spin, spin during a work day, it is he who I remember to regain focus. It is he who catches me, when dizziness begins to claim my mind. It is my son who scoops me up and pacifies me, assuring me things will be alright.

The road back to full-time work is difficult but not impossible to tread. You just need that spark of focus to keep you going, going, going. Especially on Mondays. Mondays are the hardest.

Have you experienced going from full-time Mom to part-time or full-time working Mom? Share your struggles and triumphs. Let’s support and learn from each other!

Random thoughts running on caffeine

I’m still here, wonderfully, crazily, blessedly busy with work. Still breathing. Running on caffeine.

It's gonna be a looooooooong night. Triple Venti Caramel Macchiato.

I tried quitting coffee a few months back. My break up with coffee lasted all of 3 weeks. Its hold on me has been too darn strong and so I dived back into its caffeine-laden arms. Oh coffee how I love you.

So I want to do a blog giveaway but I don’t know what to give away. Maybe something like Wifely Steps’ Favorite Things ala Oprah but not as grand as hers. Maybe my favorite book. My favorite coffee (har har). Whaddayathink?

I’ve also been thinking of changing my blog layout. Haven’t had time to really dive into the details though, but if you have blog designs/designers to recommend please leave details in comments! It would be nice to kick off with a new look in 2013.

I’m stalling. It’s 2.22 am as I type this and I’m using this blog entry to recharge my brain a little bit before diving back into putting together my team’s projects list for the week. So many exciting activities, so little time! I wish I had a personal assistant to run my errands. Andy Sachs, yes? Nah, I’m no Miranda Priestly.

Last night I dreamt Chris Evans was my boyfriend. I did NOT want to wake up. :D

We’ve put up our Christmas tree at home and it’s looking awesome. Will post pics when the decorations are complete! We’re going for a DIY look this year :) So much love put into our tree.

Have you seen Breaking Dawn Part 2 yet? Ugh, I have not. I want to.

Have you seen the international trailer for Les Miserables yet? Not yet? Well you have to! Here it is:

Cannot watch this trailer without tearing up. I spent countless days back in high school listening to Les Miserables ON CASSETTE TAPES. Mwahaha. Is that dated or what? I also saw the play when it was performed by Repertory Philippines — wonderful, wonderful. Still can’t forget how amazing Michael Williams was as Jean Valjean. Anyway, I cannot wait to see Les Miz on the big screen. Wish I could watch this with 2 of my high school friends who were as ga-ga over Les Miz as I was back then. I’ll probably see this with my sisters & Mom though as they’re super huge fans as well. Cannot wait. But perhaps this will be shown in Manila in January because we have the Metro Manila Film Festival in December.

Okay enough stalling. Time to go back to work. But do tell me… how’ve you been? :D

Getting to know Istituto Culinario

Culinary schools have always fascinated me. Watching “Top Chef” is one of my favorite things to do, and hearing where all these cheftestants trained for their art is always so cool. There are a lot of cooking schools here in the country, but I never really got to be up close and personal with any. Last Thursday though I got to visit Istituto Culinario for a few hours. After chatting with some of the faculty members and meeting some students, I was impressed!

Some facts I know now about Istituto Culinario:

  • It was formerly known as the OB Montessori Culinary College, established as the first specialized school for culinary arts in the country.
  • Its objective is to provide world-class training for aspiring professional chefs.
  • What sets Istituto Culinario apart from other cooking schools: It’s the only culinary school in Manila that has a ladderized program composed of a TESDA registered 2-year Diploma course that leads to a CHED’s registered Bachelor’s Program. This means that after two years, Istituto Culinario students have a choice of either starting a career after two years or moving directly to a full Bachelor Food Management course. So if you’re fresh out of highschool, the 4-year course would be great for you! If you already have a college degree, then you can go for the 2-year course.
  • Istituto Culinario is the only culinary school with its own farm. How awesome is that.
  • Istituto Culinario mentors are industry professionals, but they also tap mentors from outside the industry. Being a chef is also about business, marketing and management.

That’s where I came in. In their Marketing Management class, I gave a talk on Consumer Insights. It was wonderful to have shared my love for insighting with the students. It was even more wonderful to know that these culinary students were being trained in Marketing.

Thank you to the IC students for listening and participating. Thank you to Mr. Anthony Haber for inviting me to give a talk to his class. Thank you to Chef Chris Bautista and Chef James Antolin for leading such promising programs for these future chefs.

9 years of marriage

Met in May.
Fell in love in June.
Engaged in July.
Married in May!

It was a whirlwind romance. There were many reasons not to get married right away, but we shared the same thinking: “Why wait?” Impulsive it might have been, but it was a decision fueled by the kind of certainty you feel all the way to your bones.

9 years later, the certainty’s still there. Whew. Haha!

Happy 9th wedding anniversary to my dearest H! :)

BDO Shop More MasterCard: It had me at SM Advantage points

It’s tough to find a credit card that can give you a good deal these days. There’s the battle for the lowest interest rates. There’s the battle for free movie tickets or free miles. This doesn’t really interest me, as I hardly travel nor do I have time to watch movies. Yes, yes, it’s extremely personal and I am really picky. The more attuned to my lifestyle the credit card is, the more I can appreciate it. This is why I’m excited about the BDO Shop More MasterCard. Let me tell you what’s making me get this card.

I’m a big SM fan. Oh yeah. I’m there pretty much once a week. The BDO Shop More MasterCard gives more rewards and shopping value in SM, so if you’re big on SM like I am you may want to check this card out.

How’d THAT get in the house?!

I was walking down the stairs when this flash of green on the first floor caught my eye. Eek! There’s a huge insect in the house! How’d that get in here?

How'd that get in the house!?

Moving closer, I noticed it wasn’t moving. Making itself at home, eh? Hmmm.

What?!

As soon as I got to the first floor, its features became more noticeable. Oh.

Bananas over balls

You know those huge pens filled with multi-colored balls in children’s play areas? I’ve always wanted to play in those. They weren’t around yet when I was a kid. Today I finally got to experience it. Weeee!

A dream come true for me!

The play area had just opened so the toddler and I had the whole pen to ourselves. It was so much fun! The pen was about half a foot deep at least. There were so many balls. I felt like I was six years old! I kept falling on my butt.

Meanwhile, Timmy was quite the expert maneuvering his way around the pen. It wasn’t his first time to play in a pen full of balls. His Dad usually accompanies him, but today I wanted to be his playmate!

Wading

If it weren’t for my toddler I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to wade through this pen. It was an awesome experience. I think I had more fun than the little boy did. :D

So woohoo! It was a dream come true for this thirtysomething. You’re never too old to play in a pen full of multi-colored balls. If you haven’t tried it, you totally should. So much fun.

Sunday Morning at Manila Ocean Park

Manila Ocean Park is FUN! We trooped over on a Sunday morning because (a) we wanted to hit the park before the lunch crowd rushed in, and (b) the Marquez-Pacquiao fight was a-happenin’ and we felt a lot of folks would be somewhere else watching the fight. We were right with A and were sorta right with B. So yes, Manila Ocean Park was quite a pleasurable way to spend a Sunday morning. :)

Getting to Manila Ocean Park was pretty easy except for the traffic on Quezon Ave. Super bummer as the construction of the underpass near Araneta Ave. caused a major jam. Crap. We didn’t let it dampen our spirits though! After a dose positive thinking and a repeating medley of “Twinkle Twinkle” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider”, we were there. Hay salamat.

FINALLY! Darn traffic.

Manila Ocean Park is the first marine-themed park in the Philippines. There are a lot of things to enjoy here. H, Timmy and I decided on journeying through the Oceanarium. This is a marine life exhibit with over 5,000 varieties of underwater creatures. Best of all, we wanted to see the underwater viewing tunnel (Asia’s largest!) and the fishes swimming over our head. The admission fee for this is Php 400 per adult, Php 350 per kids 4ft & below, free for kids 2ft & below.

Upon entering the Oceanarium part of the Park, we were greeted with an “outdoorsy” kind of exhibit. Aaaaah, ganon pala. I thought we’d be entering the tunnel right away. Excited much?

Outdoor portion

Timmy's still trying to get used to the environment,
Timmy the toddler was still a little iffy about the fishes because of the new environment.

My favorite part of this outdoor experience was the Koi Feeding Pond (sorry, no pictures). You feed the koi with a baby bottle full of pellets and those fish aggressively feed on it. Scariness at first, then amusement comes second.

Indoors (yehey aircon!), fish exhibits of all sizes welcome and delight you. Timmy began warming up to the fish once we entered this place.

Tanks and tanks of fishes

Pompano... aren't these yummy?
A school of Pompano. My tummy was yelling, “Aren’t those yummy?”

This is the tunnel. It’s about 25 meters long and full of people, I mean, fish. Yeah, it can get quite crowded. Can’t blame the folks though! It’s fun to have your pictures taken here.

What’s in Mommy’s bag?

Going out with the toddler always involves a juggle of bags. There’s his Lightning McQueen backpack, which holds his extra clothes, some toys, wipes and diapers. There’s his Lego lunchbox, which holds his water, milk and snacks. Then there’s the Mommy bag — MY bag, which is more like a baby bag. I emptied out the contents of my Mommy bag just to see how much of it is Timmy’s:

In the Mommy's bag

Oh-kay! Let me take you on a tour. Let’s start with the sketchpad on the right:

Care Bears Sketch Pad
Ballpen
Mongol Crayons
Red toy car
Big Bird figure
Baby Po figure
Bag of M&M’s
Camera case
Stickers
Folded cloth diaper
Bib
Wallet
Hairbrush
Lotion
Baby wipes
iPhone
Red kit which contains Claritin, Ponstan, lipstick, face powder and anti-bacterial hand gel
Sunglasses

It’s a baby bag with some of Mommy’s stuff, that’s what! I whip out the sketchpad and the stickers when we’re at restaurants. It keeps him occupied for a few minutes. When the stickers are no longer entertaining, out come the crayons one by one. I don’t give him the whole box because he empties it on the restaurant table, causing a huge mess. The toys are obviously for entertainment, the cloth diaper for wiping sweat, drool or food from his face, the bib a back-up to the others in his baby bag, the lotion acting like first aid for his sensitive skin.

The stash of M&M’s keeps me sane. I never leave home without chocolate.

The baby has dominated my bag. I’m fine with that. But I’m not sharing my M&M’s!

What’s in your Mommy bag?

Our only talk about separation

Here’s a conversation with the husband after I told him about my frustrating dream about Scott Speedman (frustrating = nothing happened because of my good girl subconscious). English translation is at the end the post.

The man of, and in, my dreams *sigh*

Husband: “Sige pag-naging jowa mo si Scott Speedman pwede mo na ako hiwalayan.”
Me: “Husby! Paano ka na?”
Husband: “Eh, maghahanap nalang ako ng iba.”
Me: “O sige sino sa ‘yo?”
Husband: “Si Solen.”
Me: “Ayoko! Pinay yun eh. Possible yun.”
Husband: “Anong possible. O sige sino Pinoy sa ‘yo?”
Me: “Wala eh.”
Husband:John Lloyd?”
Me: “Ayoko.”
Husband:Sam Milby? Dingdong Dantes?”
Me: “Hmmm. Sige pag-iisipan ko muna.”
Husband: “Basta pag naging jowa ko si Solen pwede mo na akong hiwalayan.”
Me: “Hahaha, paano kung foreign?”
Husband:Blake Lively.”
Me: “Gossip Girl! Fine. Isip ako.”

Okay now I have to think of a Pinoy counterpart to his Solen. Challenge ACCEPTED! Any suggestions?

So this must be our version of the “Freebie List.” This game was presented on the third season of FRIENDS. The “freebie list” is a list of celebrities that one can romance (and do other smexy stuff with) without anyone getting upset. In that episode, Ross trimmed down his list by eliminating Isabella Rossellini, who he bumps into shortly after.

I am so not taking Scott Speedman off my list. I’ll worry about the consequences later. Haha!

To my dear conservative friends: This is obviously just friendly joshing between me and H. Should any of the above scenarios happen, it’s most likely because one of us was dreaming or you are living in an alternate universe (which my present universe self would be kinda be jealous of).

Do you have a “freebie list” with your partner? :) Share if you do! It’s all in good fun!

Toddler vs. Laundry

This is what happens when I turn my back on the toddler for a split-second.

Timmy vs. the Laundry

What was I doing when I wasn’t looking? Fixing toy clutter. Before I could say, “All cleaned up!” I heard a little shuffle behind me. Ta-da. I wonder why he just HAD to take all his laundry out. I think he was searching for one of his toys. Or maybe he just wanted a little more clutter in the room.

Maybe the title of this post should’ve been Toddler and Laundry VS. Mommy!

You don’t do much all day, do you?

This post was first published on philstar.com’s Unblogged. I’m sharing it here in my blog for my Wifely Steps family. This is for all the work-at-home and stay-at-home Moms who feel they’re misunderstood. Cheers!

We were having a quiet lunch and I was complaining to my friend how I didn’t have time for myself anymore. She looked at me square in the face and asked, “But aren’t you a stay-at-home mother?” I nodded, raising my own fork instinctively as she put hers down. “Then you must have at least some time for yourself,” she insisted. “After all, you don’t do much all day, do you?”

It took every amount of energy I had not to hurl my fork across the table. I calmed myself down thinking silently to myself that no, she didn’t understand because she’s not a mother. No, she didn’t understand because she doesn’t run around all day chasing a toddler. Her words stung. There I was relishing what little time off I had from Toddlerville when that question was, well, innocently, thrown at me. I realize now that her question was borne out of curiosity more than sarcasm, but at that very moment my fork could have made quite the weapon.

The corporate world was my life for twelve years. When motherhood came my way, I knew I wanted to be a stay-at-home mother, especially during my son’s first years. It’s been six months since I’ve resigned, but every day I am challenged in a totally different yet still dynamic setup. I tell you: Nothing compares to the challenges a stay-at-home mom faces every single day, every single hour. It’s just as (if not more) dynamic, tedious and tiring, only you can wear pajamas and go barefoot all day.

“I take care of the baby,” I replied in a tentative tone. How else could I answer the question? Do I tell my friend a typical day in the life of this mother? Waking up when the baby does. Playing in bed before we go down for breakfast. Preparing breakfast. Having breakfast. (Have you tried feeding what could be the world’s pickiest eater? If that doesn’t drain your energy, I don’t know what will.) Cleaning up after breakfast. Washing poop. (Have you tried washing the cute butt of what could be the world’s wriggliest baby?) Cleaning up. Bathing baby. (I repeat: Wriggliest) Nursing baby. Teaching baby with building blocks, crayons, cars, crumpled paper, empty tin cans and old socks. Chasing baby around the house (repeat at least ten times throughout the day). Wiping away drool. Wiping away sweat. Fixing the laundry while he stays still for ten minutes watching a DVD. Picking up the toys he throws on the floor so he doesn’t slip on them while running around the house. I haven’t even gotten started on what happens right before lunchtime.

goodmorningclutter

If a stay-at-home mom of one experiences this crazy scenario everyday, what more a mother of two? Three? What more a mother of preschool children, of tweens and teens? What more a mother of all of the above? I don’t want to imagine what their reactions would be when they are thrown the question, “You’re a stay-at-home mother? Then you don’t do much all day, do you?” Let me clear the table of all cutlery before World War Fork begins.

I looked at my friend and repeated, “I take care of the baby.” This time I said it without any trace of apprehension. It filled my heart just saying it again. The day is all about the baby. The days are all about the baby. I’m a stay-at-home mother and proud of it. The few moments I have to myself come when midnight strikes. Call me Cinderella. Midnight is when I begin writing freelance or getting into the shower. The little one consumes majority of 24 hours and I am immensely happy about it. True, I am crazy tired, but it is what it is. We stay-at-home moms are quite the misunderstood lot, aren’t we?

You don’t do much all day, do you? Maybe I should ask my friend to come join me for a day in Toddlerville. For lunch we’ll eat with our hands the way the toddler does. I don’t trust myself with forks just yet.

An afternoon at Ark Avilon Zoo

Ark Avilon Zoo is the only interactive indoor zoo in the Philippines. With the baby developing an interest in animals, we thought it was prime time to take him to the zoo. Ark Avilon was perfect because it’s very accessible (near the Eastwood area) and it’s shaded (no glaring sun!). So one Sunday afternoon, off we went to Ark Avilon.

Ark Avilon
Looks like an ark on the outside!

We arrived at Ark Avilon Zoo around 4.30pm. There weren’t that many people, but shortly after we arrived a tour group followed. I’m guessing the morning is the best time to visit the zoo so it won’t be that hot either.

Reception
Ticket Area

A ticket costs P300/adult, P200 if you’re a kid, free if you’re one year and below. Timmy got in free. Here’s what the first floor looks like:

First floor
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

Upon entering the zoo, you’ll encounter a beautiful blue and gold macaw and a white parrot perched on their stands. You can have their picture taken with them, under the supervision of a zoo guide. Both sides of the first floor’s long hall feature various wild animals.

What will 2011 be like for you?

There’s a belief that the way you spend your New Year’s Eve gives you an indication of how the rest of your year will go. Oh goody. My 2011 looks like a simply delicious and restful year then.

Tofu for Toni

Shortly before 2011 rolled in, I snacked on a bowl of tofu. This is a simple dish my mother-in-law made. It’s cubed tofu sauteed in oil, chopped white onions, chopped green onions, ground pork and shrimp.

New Year's Eve stash

More simple good eats that I enjoyed were two slices of bread: one slathered with a Quezo de Bola spread, and the other topped with oh-so-delicious chicken pork adobo. Then I washed them all away with a cup of strong, dark tea. Bliss.

While I relished my simple and tasty meal, I finished Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love” and started Gwenda Blair’s “Donald Trump” biography. Good reads.

By eleven, I tucked the baby in and we dozed off into dreamland. Had it not been for my husband waking me up to softly greet me “Happy New Year!” I would have slept through the night. Well, I guess I did. After saying “Happy New Year!” back, I drifted off to sleep again.

Simple. Delicious. Restful. I like that. Sounds like my kind of year.

Based on your New Year’s Eve, what will 2011 be like for you?
