A Grandfather’s Love

Everyone’s excited about Timmy’s arrival, but there’s one person who seems more excited than all of the family combined.

My Dad has a garden full of trinkets, and that pumpkin has been a mainstay even beyond Halloween. Imagine my surprise when we came upon this graffiti’d pumpkin a few days ago! :) Yep, the grandfather (“lolo” in Filipino) is very much excited with his first grandchild’s coming.

Another way of showing his love and enthusiasm? Painting Timmy’s closet and toy shelf himself. The bedroom closet was pretty beat-up, and the toy shelf I had since I was a child looked pretty aged. They both needed some refreshing, and so I asked my Dad to help tap a painter to do the job. He said he wanted to do it himself. I asked him to just hire someone, as I didn’t want to tire him out. But nooo, he insisted. I think it was his own way of showing some Timmy love.

Clockwise from top left: My beat-up closet. Lolo paints the closet white.
Reviving my toy shelf for Timmy. Clean and white, thanks to Lolo!

There’s so much Lolo love going around the home it feels all so warm and fuzzy. I can’t wait for my Dad to meet and greet his first grandchild. I’m sure they’ll have a relationship like no other.

  10. Kittymama Says:

My dad was recovering from a stroke when he had his first grandchild (my son Alex). He was severely depressed, partially paralyzed, unable to do much of anything. While he was sick, his siblings disowned him (really long story, pang- “Maalaala Mo Kaya”). The only person who could bring a smile to his face was his grandson, who, as an infant, liked to sleep prone on my dad’s chest. Alex would calm down and sleep right away when he felt his lolo’s beating heart and they would stay that way for hours. My dad eventually recovered from that stroke.

God is good; He gave my dad a new reason to live just when he thought he had none left. Even now that Alex is 16, he still likes to lie down beside my dad and hold his lolo’s hand. I think there is nothing in this world like a grandparent’s love for a grandchild and lucky is the child who grows up knowing love from them. Hugs to you and your dad!

I did not have any memory with either of my lolo (but have doting lolas, now only , doting lola) so I can say that Timmy is so lucky to have a very sweet lolo… You have a doting father, who will surely (soon) be a doting lolo too. ^_^
