Pregnancy and green mangoes

Indian Mangoes

“You’re craving green mangoes? Are you pregnant?”

Is it a myth that women gravitate towards green mangoes most especially when pregnant? I wonder. But I can attest that there was one time I HOGGED a whole bowl of green mangoes from my sister. I didn’t know I was pregnant then. My sister knew better than to tease me. So a day later, when I found out I WAS pregnant and told her about it, she shouted out “I knew it! I knew it! You were hogging the green mangoes! I knew it!”

I wonder why green mangoes are craved for by pregnant women. Is it because the mangoes have a distinct sweet-sour taste? Hmm. I’ve always loved green mangoes, especially when it’s bordering on the ripe side already. The Indian Mangoes in the picture are the perfect mangoes for me — not fully ripe, still a bit green on some sides, and still great with bagoong (shrimp paste). Funny thing is I don’t look for mangoes, I don’t crave it. But once a bowl is placed before me, well, make way for the mangoes hogger.

Do you know of anyone who had an intense craving for mangoes when they were pregnant? What’s your green mango-pregnancy story? :)

I think the sour taste offsets the nausea that most pregnant women get in the first trimester. I didn’t crave green mangoes since there weren’t any available here but I did crave hot and sour soup all the time at some point during my pregnancy.

If there were mangoes there perhaps you would’ve feasted on them too? :D And you’re right, it could offset the nausea come to think of it!

My mom craved green mangoes when she was pregnant with me! In fact, she was in Hawaii, visiting friends, and spotted unripe mangoes dangling from a tree spotted in someone’s backyard. She made my dad knock on the door and ask if they could buy some. “But they’re not ripe!” the owners said. “We know,” my dad answered, “but my wife’s pregnant.” The homeowners ended up giving them a whole bag.

Pregnancy symptoms differ from woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy; however, one of the most significant pregnancy symptoms is a delayed or missed menstrual cycle. Understanding the signs and symptoms of pregnancy is important because of each of these maybe related to something other than pregnancy. Below is a listing of some of the most common pregnancy signs and symptoms. If you have been sexually active and experiencing any of the following, it is important to take a pregnancy test.

Well I totally craved for green mangoes. I prepared a mixture of curry powder, vinegar, salt, sugar and lemon juice. I would slice the mangoes into bite sized pieces and munch it all up. I would sometimes even have dreams of swimming in a pool of diced up mangoes and the mixture…yum…yum…lol. I found out I was having a girl. It got to a point that I insisted my hubby drive around looking for a shop that sold mangoes. We eventually found 1 but they were selling 1 mango for the price of a pocket…still bought it though…hehehe….good stuff!
