Action Heroine Blog-A-Thon: Elizabeth Swann

When Nathaniel of the Film Experience Blog announced a blog-a-thon on Women in Action Films, I quickly began making a mental list of power women I admired. Ripley. The Bride. Elektra. One heroine stood out though.

Elizabeth Swann. Okay, who hasn’t seen Pirates of the Carribean? I’m sure you’re very familiar with her story — a girl from a life or privilege turns pirate. How? Why? Er.. watch the films! I admire how strong-willed, feisty and calculating she is, but still very feminine at the same time. She reminds me very much of Laurana from TSR’s Dragonlance series. If I were to learn a thing or two about strongly handling a sword while being elegantly feminine, I would love to get lessons from Elizabeth Swann.

Who’s your favorite action heroine? Comment here or share your answers over at Film Experience.

My favorite hero has to be the bride, I’m just…. awed by what she was able to do. She can take care of herself and… just wow! :)

Me, I like Mulan. The final scene when the emperor gives her the sword and declares, “Show this to your parents so they may know what you have done for China” (or something like that) really makes me tear up. Seriously.

Elizabeth Swann is perfect, yes! But I like Kara Thrace aka Starbuck of the new Battlestar Galactica. Sassy, impulsive, rebellious, blonde but definitely far from dumb, the fleet’s best Viper pilot.

ITA with Cookie, Mulan is top notch! Although this Disney character was given less attention, she still draws an audience. There were beautiful moments of raw strength as well vulnerability as the young lady grew.

Angelina’s Mrs. Smith/Lara Croft is straight bad a$$. GI Jane is up there as well. I also like Angela Bennet from The Net, smart and savvy. And of course, my list wouldn’t be complete without Princess Leia. She’s the Queen!

i hope y’all enjoyed the other entries too. I mentioned Elizabeth Swann too (i equate her with Wendy from Peter Pan.

ANYWHO. thanks for contributing to the ‘Thon

Ooh I remember Laurana from Dragonlance. Nice analogy! I have to say (and yes I’m probably biased) is I like Lara Croft (esp. the Angelina version.. hehe) cause she’s hella rich but instead of paying other people to seek the treasure, she goes for it herself. What a babe!
