Bowling for Fruits

Fruits are lovely to snack on especially if they’ve been sliced, cubed or just plain made ready to eat for you. What’s easier than grabbing a banana from a bunch, peeling it and eating it right? No hassle. Same goes for fruit bowls. If you pre-plan your slicing and dicing, eating your fruits right away will be quick and easy.

Quick and easy is relative. Peeling an orange isn’t really a hassle, is it? For some people it can be. When H and I come home from work, all we want to do is chill out. Having to slice open a huge watermelon and peel oranges after a long long day is, for me, not chilling out. Bananas and apples I don’t pre-slice though. Bananas get mushy and the apples brown. Because that won’t look very appetizing, they’re the only little extra work I do when preparing the fruit bowls.

Bench in the BedroomOn the same day that I buy my fruits, I immediately chop some up and place them into containers. Sometimes I mix and match the fruits, sometimes it’s all one kind of fruit in one Tupperware bowl. These containers are then placed in the refrigerator. Anytime I crave for fruits therefore, all I have to do is open the ref and ta-da! I can take my pick. Am I in the mood for a mix-and-match fruit bowl or shall I go watermelon all the way? Ah, the possibilities.

In the picture: H and I have a container of mixed fruits each and share a bowl of watermelon cubes. We wash down all this healthy goodness with hot green tea. Mmmmm. This is our way of unwinding after a long day.

Another good thing about these fruit bowls? They’re chilled! That’s perfect for this summer’s hot hot hot weather. I love biting into an orange and tasting its cold tangy juice. If you have freezer-friendly containers, these fruits will make fabulous frozen delights too.

Slicing, dicing and cubing your fruits ahead of time give you fruit bowls that are ready to eat. While anyone can benefit from this, I think it would be even more special for busy bees (those who’d just want to grab a snack right away then go through the ceremonies of peeling and slicing) and children (for quick and easy access to a healthy snack).

Pao: Ay sarap. Yesss with salt!

Jher: Karez. Yan ang parang bawi nalang namin ni H after a day of stress and fastfood. At least before we go to bed we nourished ourselves with some healthy food. Pag breakfast fruits din. Start and end the day healthy!

cbs: Ay tama ka diyan! Frozen watermelon, or chilled pala… sarap…. tapos lagyan mo ng konting asin. Heavenly. Thanks for the tip on freezing bananas. Pwede nga rin pala! Mahal ang strawberries dito so bananas and pakwan nalang muna hehehe. Masarap din gawin sa na-freeze na pakwan eh i-blender kaagad. Refreshing!

Yummmy!! I love it when summer fruits are in season. My husband and I make have almost-frozen watermelon regularly as a midnight snack. Sometimes, pag nakaswerte, we have “pininyang” pakwan. Yun dilaw. Also melon sometimes. With the melon I scoop the seeds into a strainer and make “lamas” until all the juice comes out. Then I add some sugar (or Splenda pag nahuhuli ako ng asawa ko) then some calamansi then add it to the diced melon. Freeze it. Saaaarrraaap!!! For some reason I lose weight when I do this.

Gr8 idea! We like bringing a cupsize container of fruits to work along with a non-sweetened yoghurt … tapos just mix the 2 together, or pag medyo late kami sa umaga, we just throw the frozen fruit in a blender with yogurt for a breakfast shake …

This reminds me, I need to buy more fruits but you’re right. It’s better if you chop them up right away so when you’re hungry, it’s easy to grab fruits instead of bad snacks.

What a nice coincidence Toni. I also love cutting fruits into small bite size pieces and chilling them before eating. I agree, it makes a nice and healthy snack.
