Not Quite Easter with Krispy Kreme
When my sisters and I were kids, my Mom would prepare an Easter Egg Hunt for us. There would be three sets of searches (one for each of us girls). The hunt would start off with Mama giving each of us our own clues. Each clue would lead us to a location where a bright-colored egg is hidden, which would also have another clue that would lead to more colored eggs and more clues. The end of the hunt would culminate in only one corner of the house, and so my sisters and I would try our fastest to go through our own searches to get to that corner first! Ah, fun fun times. Because of that wonderful childhood experience, I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Easter eggs.
When I saw Krispy Kreme’s EDSA billboard announcing its egg-shaped doughnuts, I was ecstatic! I love Krispy Kreme. I love Easter Eggs. I couldn’t wait to get to the nearest branch. And so when I was gifted with two boxes of these Easter Krispy Kremes, oh boy, I just couldn’t wait till snack time to give them a try!
Okay, here’s the hard truth. I was expecting Easter Egg doughnuts. Translated: Doughnuts shaped like eggs. Doughnuts with frosting in pastel colors like green, pink and yellow. Doughnuts that had the typical Easter Egg designs like bunnies, flowers and zigzags. Wouldn’t you be expecting the same thing? Here’s what they looked like.
The Krispy Kreme doughnuts didn’t look bad. They looked… regular. The thing is, they didn’t scream Easter to me. There wasn’t even a whisper of Easter. Where were my pastel colors? Where were the Easter zigzags? The bubbly excitement I felt upon receiving the boxes disappeared as soon as I opened the boxes. Fine, they were egg-shaped. But as one colleague pointed out, they just looked like a regular doughnut that was squished on its sides until it resembled an egg.
The Easter doughnuts come in two flavors: cream cheese and chocolate. Chocolate doughnuts are always a winning choice, and they were the first to be devoured. Initially, I disliked the cream cheese flavor but admittedly, it kinda grew on me. I liked how it wasn’t too sweet but it was still deliciously creamy. Yum Krispy Kreme’s doughnuts have always been lighter and softer than others. These Easter doughnuts were expectedly light and fluffy! At least one expectation of mine was met.
I checked the local Krispy Kremes website to read about this new offering. Turns out there are five Easter designs. I only saw three, so I’m hoping the other two are more Easter. The designs I saw really didn’t put me in any Easter mood.
The site also says these doughnuts are “great substitutes for Easter hunts.” Well, maybe not for me. In my case, my Easter Egg hunts always had bright and colorful eggs in pretty pastel colors and bubbly designs. They were light pink, canary yellow and sea green, sometimes printed with bunnies, carrots and flowers. If I were to design these doughnuts, they’d look like real Easter Eggs:

Oh man, I didn’t think about that!! since Krispy Kreme is a bit further down from us, I don’t get to go there much but I’ll have to check those out.

I read about your Krispy Kreme Easter Doughnut “teaser” post on MB where you posted the billboard photo. I was also expecting Easter-looking Doughnuts.
My SIL and I organized an Easter Egg Hunt last year for the kids in our family. It was really fun. I don’t think Yohan can join this year because we’ll be attending a children’s party. Maybe that party will have an Easter Egg Hunt.

As for the color, I wonder if they have bright and cheerful food coloring that you could safely eat.

I was curious just the same. I went to High Street yesterday (after a month or so – lots of shops open already!). But, the line was still too long.
