Atis

Atis!

What memories do you associate with this fruit? :)

I remember… our neighbor’s atis tree. It was tall and its thin branches reached out onto the 2nd floor. I remember… atis as one of the first fruits I tasted as a kid. I liked the slightly sweet taste of the soft atis flesh. I’d split the atis in half, dig my spoon in and eat 4 to 5 pieces of flesh-coated seeds at a time. I’d be careful not to swallow the seeds because I didn’t want to have an atis tree grow from my tummy! I remember… prep. Atis was one of the sections for the Prep A level. Their class adviser’s name was Miss Gabriel. I was under Prep A Lansones. I remember… tasting an atis cheesecake. I just can’t remember where I had that. I remember… opening the refrigerator and being so happy to see a bowl full of atis! Can you tell that it’s one of my favorite fruits?

I remember being young and munching on an atis fruit, only to find out that my loose front tooth came off and I was horrified that I swallowed it, along with the atis. I cried and cried, knowing that it is the end of my young life. When I finally got my senses back together and picked-up the atis to eat it again, lo and behold, there was the wayward tooth, stuck in the atis — camouflaged, blending right into the fruit.

I remember the smell, the texture, the sweetness of it. Argh! I want some!!! :-)

We had a tree at our backyard back home but I think they cut it down. Too bad, it was a childhood favorite tree.

I love eating atis since I was a little girl. My yaya would tell me not to swallow the atis seeds because if I do they might grow inside my tummy … and I believed her. ha! ha! It was a good deterrent not to eat those black seeds.

I realized my son hasn’t tasted atis yet. I should definitely let him try it. I’m sure he will like it too.

    Hi Toni,

I always looked forward to eating the fruit…until I found an itsy-bitsy white worm inside. That was the end for me… heheheh

I remember my younger years when I see an atis. Same with Noemi, we have a tree at my parent’s house, together with other fruit-bearing trees. Ever since we moved to our grandparents’ house in Manila 13 years ago, I haven’t eaten one again :(

Oo nga pala, SHSian ka pala, Toni. I can’t recall what my section was in Prep A. All I can remember is that our classroom’s beside Atis, the first room you’d see if you’re coming from the gate. And I was ‘pang-umaga’ then. Would you know? :)

i remember being a kid and loving every meat on each atis seed! hahaha
my mom used to buy them from Crossing (market) and sometimes from her officemates.

i like the real big ones! but there was one time, just last year i think, i was munching on atis heartfully when i saw something moving… i got a closer look and oh my! fruit worms!!! they are white too so its hard to spot them. my mom does not believe me when i said there were tiny white worms..

since then, i am careful when buying and eating atis. : ) but i still love them!
