Avocado Ice Candy (LP11: Summertime Coolers and Memories of Summer)

Frozen Avocado on Toothpicks

Mama made this when we were kids. While avocado is available even during the rainy season, we usually had avocado ice candy during the summer to beat the heat. I remember watching Mama mash the avocado flesh with a fork, mix in the milk and sugar, then pour the mixture into ice cube trays. She also made sure that the avocado wasn’t too mushy — avocado chunks gave each ice candy an added texture and yum factor. The chunks also help set the toothpicks in place. Mama would place two of the toothpicks at the center of each cube. Sometimes we did without the toothpicks. She would then place the trays in the freezer.

After a few hours, the avocado ice candy would be ready. Delicious! My sisters and I would take two to three ice cubes each and scarf them down. Mama has also tried placing these avocado ice cubes in a blender right after for a rich milkshake.

The picture above was taken last Sunday. Mama prepared it for us and it was just as I remembered. I felt like I was 10 years old all over again.

Hey Toni, I love avocado ice cream! It’s easy to make, just mash the avocado and mix it with evaporated and condensed milk; put in a blender for better consistency. Voila!

don’t you just love how the ice candy has evolved from blah orange and grape (which is just diluted Sunny Orange and Grape. now memories of my childhood are really flooding back!) amounting to P1.00 to avocado, cookies and cream, mango, and other specialty ice candies that cost around 5-10 pesos. haaaay. missed you, mare! busy ka noh?

Funny but just as I am reading your blog, I am being fed by my wife, actually sharing her avocado with me. (I can’t stand to get my own when I’m on the computer, hehehe) You know the kind. The one with milk, sugar and ice. Yummy.

  9. sachiko Says:

oh,i didn’t know you put sugar to an avocado dessert? (avocado here is sometimes eaten as a side dish, dip in soysauce with mustard, along with sashimi or raw fish).

i wanna try that,im sure my kids will love it! but, sheesh, avocados here are quite expensive.. :(

open pa ba yung ref project mo?

  10. JMom Says:

Hi Toni! oh these are wonderful! The girls and I love avocado ice too. I have finally awakened their palates to eating avocado as a dessert. Most Americans think it strange to sweeten avocado too. Most of the time it is used only in salads, guacamole, and as Sachiko said with sushi, california rolls. Thanks for joining LP11, Toni. No, you’re not too late, I will add you to the roundup now ;)

  11. hanagirl Says:

    now I know…

    when the world
    gives you a lemon
    you make a lemonade,

    but when the world
    gives you an avocado
    you can make something
    besides a guacamole…

  15. mare Says:

Mmmmm, perferct on a hot day!

  16. eye Says:

kadadaan ko lang sa blog ni ting-aling and read that funny story about guacamole/nacho vs. avocado in condensed milk hehe! sarap nga ng ice candy, or shake, or even yung ice cream… i guess it’s because of the calories from this fruit hahaha!

  17. Mita Says:

hehehe…when I was still in the Philippies, I couldn’t take that guacamole cause it wasn’t sweet and cold. Now, I live with people who cannot imagine avocado, cheese and corn ice cream! toni, this really looks so refreshing. tipong stick to your lips on a hot summer day kind of refreshing…

  18. Luchie Says:

how i miss the avocado nowadays. your photo just reminded me of its delicious taste.
have a nice day and thanks for visiting my food site.

  19. vina Says:

i love anything avocado! i love it the most when it’s just plain avocado mixed with sugar and milk, and just cold enough (not iced) to enjoy. for fruit shakes, i always ask for avocado first.

i can eat it everyday, bahala na if it’s fattening.

  20. mike Says:

i love anything avocado! will definitely try this one soon! baka bukas . . . tee hee!

  21. eat matters Says:

your post bring memories o fmy childhood days in iloilo. we had an avocado tree in the yard. come summer we would make ” frozen”. that’s how we called them.

i like the the way you made them with toothpicks. appealing and practical

  22. karol Says:

wow!!! ang sarap naman. you should also try it with chocolate, just like the shake. yummy!
