Starring: Fruit Cocktail (The Recipes!)

Fruit Cocktail We did an “Iron Chef” thing here last weekend, with Fruit Cocktail as the not-so-secret ingredient. We got a lot of great ideas! Thanks to all those who shared their recipes. I haven’t tried fruit cocktail beyond fruit salad, fruit cups and crema de fruita. With the ideas shared below, you and I can now put a little more twist to our typical fruit salad, and hey, even mix in fruit cocktail in a chicken dish!

Get those recipe cards and shopping lists out! Enjoy these wonderful fruit cocktail ideas.

Barbara’s Fruit Cocktail Custard Tart
Get yourself some little tart shells. Fill with fruit cocktail and custard and top with freshly whipped cream.

Fruit cocktail in pudding.

Drain fruit cocktail. Add sour cream, condensed milk, cream cheese and extra fresh fruits (e.g. mangoes and strawberries — this is optional).
In a serving dish, layer lady fingers (broas) then pour a scoop of the fruit mixture. Repeat the steps alternating the lady fingers and mixture.
Leave in freezer for about an hour — instant fruit salad cake!

Add 1c heavy cream until desired consistency is achieved. Chill dressing overnight.
Prepare fruits (2 cans pineapple chunks, 2 cans Fruit Cocktail – drained, sliced bananas, apples, strawberries, peaches, grapes, nectarines orange sections, any seasonal favorite fruits and raisins. Place in a bowl. Pour dressing over prepared fruit in bowl, mix gently and serve.
Ganns’ Eat-Some Sweet Hum
Bring the syrup of 2 small cans of fruit cocktail (he prefers lychee flavor) to a boil in a medium saucepan.
Put 5 slices of cooked ham in, and cook until almost all syrup is gone.
Empty the fruits into the saucepan. Place one teaspoon of sugar in one of the empty cans of fruit cocktail and half-fill it with water.
Plate the ham. Spoon the fruits onto the ham or on the side.
Drizzle the syrup onto the ham and fruits and serve immediately.
Toni’s Easy as ABC Frozen Fruit Salad
A) Drain the fruit cocktail but leave some of the syrup in the can. B) Divide the fruit cocktail into two bowls and mix in all-purpose cream into each bowl. C) Chill. Or Freeze.

it’s an expression that Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in J.D. Salinger’s only novel- The Catcher in the Rye, uses when something catches his attention and amuses or amazes him. I use it in the same context and I simply mean:

“You never cease to amaze me…”

    ..take care…

Fruit cocktail is one of my favorite foods from my childhood. I would often try to sneak it from the fridge so that I could eat it before the main meal. Eventually, my Mom let me eat my dessert first.

Thanks for the great memory: now I’m going to go find a recipe to make some this weekend.

I’ll save some for Michele, who sent me to your delightful blog tonight.

Here from Michele’s, amazed at the versatility of a can of mixed fruit. I remember when my daughter was little, picking out the grapes for me (so she wouldn’t choke) and the cherries for her (her favorite).
